It's funny how far away from the topic this conversation has strayed...

I was trying to be serious about it but Eaglebauer and Dark Tink had to be a couple of bullies and throw this thread off topic.

I agree with the OP, it's a bit too technical and honestly most of them have likely been here at least a couple generations, so I wouldn't say they were anything African anymore. And my boyfriend refers to himself as black, I've never heard him say "African-American" in reference himself or anyone else.

I have always wondered why black people insist on being called "African-Americans". White people are rarely called "Caucasians". I don't think that they should be called "African-American" unless they have immigrated here from Africa. My mother was born in Ireland and moved to America, so technically she is Irish-American, but I was born here, so I'm just an American. I just think that black people shouldn't be called African-American unless they actually moved here from Africa, because other American citizens don't receive the same title.

Wait, you CAN'T just lump ALL blacks in this country together like that....my mother's parents were born in Sicily, my mom was white, she was born in America. My dad was black, he too was born in America. I was born in America as well as my brother and sister......I don't know why, but for some strange reason, I only call myself "AMERICAN"......that's it PERIOD!!! I will NOT allow ANYONE to refer to me as an "African American".......but hey, that's just this American's (me) beliefs and views on the issue. You have to keep in mind, America is "suppose" to be a free country, therefore ANY American can call themselves WHATEVER they like! It ONLY makes sense, that if you were born on American soil, you are an AMERICAN.

African-American is just another term for 'Black.'

Charlize Theron is from South Africa and is now a legal American citizen but you would never refer to her as an African American.

Why? Because she's white!
