How do you pronounce the word 'Advertisement'?

Do you pronounce it Advertissment or Advertize-ment?

I'm personally with the former, but increasingly I've heard people pronouncing it the latter way.

Anyone else noticed this?

I'm slightly suprised.

I was always told that that was incorrect.

Teachers and parents. On tv they pronounce it the way you do, but whilst being tought we were always told it was wrong to pronounce it that way.

Hmm, that says you can pronounce it either way.

Odd.

Teachers and parents are not reliable sources, I'm afraid.

Dictionaries, however, are. I sadly don't have access to an OED, but M-W, Random House, and the American Heritage Dictionary all list "adverTIZEment" as the primary pronunciation. Perhaps it's an American thing.

England and the US - two nations separated by the Atlantic Ocean. Wait, I mean two nations separated by a common language.

In the UK typically adverTISSment, in the US adverTIZEment. Of course as US culture becomes ever more pervasive, the US pronunciation is taking over.

It's already taken over many other words. For example how many English people still use the English spelling GAOL instead of the American JAIL? How many people even realize that the spelling GAOL even exists?

Ahh makes sence.

I noticed that about how to spell Goal or Jail after a conversation with my Australian gf.

Australia is interesting, more similar to the UK, but with some cases where it's more similar to American English.

Good rule of thumb that I've found seems to work. The US is lazy with spelling and so will spell a word the easiest way, and typically more phonetically, and yet pronunciation of words is often a little more cumbersome with more emphasis on every syllable. The UK is lazy with pronunciation and so although we go out of our way to add unnecessary silent letters (through vs thru), we'll typically pronounce words the easiest way possible.

Thats just personal experience though.

Yeah, I always pronounce it Left... but some people pronounce it like it's spelt.
