The Yankees shaved a game off of the lead in the AL East and now trail the Red Sox by 5 1/2 games. The Yankees lead the wild-card by three games over the Tigers and by five over the Mariners.

A-Rod is proving to the world that he's worth every cent of that expected $30 million dollar a year contract that Scott Boras is going to start the bidding at.

Rodriguez hit two home runs and Andy Pettitte was solid in the 11-5 win over the Royals. A-Rod now has 515 career home runs and owns the major league record for the most home runs hit by a third baseman.

Andy Pettitte (13-8) allowed just two runs, seven hits, and one walk in 6 1/2 innings.

With the Yankees leading 2-0 going into the fourth; A-Rod would put the Yankees ahead when his mammoth two-run home run that landed in deep centerfield stretched the lead to 4-2.

With the game tied 4-4, the Yankees exploded in the sixth, and put the Royals away for good. A-Rod started the onslaught when his solo shot found the seats in left.

With Brian Banister gone, the Yanks stepped on the gas.

Wih two on and nobody out, Wilson Betemit ripped a three-run home run off of Ryan Z. Braun that extended their lead to 8-2. With two on and one out,

Alberto Gonzalez's fielder's choice pushed across Melky Cabrera for a 9-4 lead. Bobby Abreu punctuated the seven-run inning by ripping a two-run double that scored Johnny Damon and Gonzalez for a 11-4 lead.

Chris Britton, Brian Bruney, and Edwar Ramirez combined to allow three runs, three hits, and four walks in relief of Andy Pettitte.

Damon, A-Rod, and Betemit combined to go 7-for-13 with 6 runs and 8 RBIs on the night.
