I only sleep 3-41/2 hours regardless of what steps I take to sleep longer. It doesn't matter what condition I'm in or how long I've been awake. I wake feeling rested and alert. I do not take naps. This has been going on for years. I usually stay up till 2 or 3am just so that I get up at 6am or 7am. Sometimes I do get somewhat sleepy at 9:30-10pm but if I go to bed, I'll wake up at about 12:30 or 1am and can't go back to sleep. Alcohol, pills seem to have no effect in making me sleep longer.
I also do not use an alarm clock nor have I used one in over 15-20 years.
I do have the ability to look at the clock when I go to bed and wake up within (+-)15min of the time I need to awaken.
Would like to sleep longer 7-8 hrs preferred if possible. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

avoid caffeine ....especially two hours before sleeping ....learn to relax ...don't go to bed with troubles on your mind .....practice relaxation exercises ....do physical exercise on a regular basis ....keep your bedroom for sleeping only , so when in your bedroom you feel in a sleeping mood .....drink a hot milky drink before sleeping ...no charge

melatonin is about the only thing that works for me. I take one of those pills and I get about 6 hours of sleep, otherwise it is about how you described.

Melatonin is amazing, works so well, shame it's not sold over here.

You're 55. It's natural for you to get less sleep however I'm not sure if you're not getting enough. You say you wake up fine. I guess you're just lucky. Your body doesn't need lots of energy in the day. Or maybe you just don't use much energy in the day. What do you normally do during the day and what do you generally eat?

I don't know, but I can do that with the clock. I can say, okay, just going to sleep for 30 minutes and then get up... and yep, I can do that without needed an alarm. I can tell myself that I need to get up a 5 the next morning and I'll get up by then without an alarm. But in all those times, I'm telling myself that I need to be up so and so, and I can do it. But if I don't need to get up up, I can easily sleep.

I cook all my foods, stay away from fast foods, previously had my own business as Handyman/Home Repair, before that worked corporate and military. Now not as active due to coronary disability/retirement, but still get out. This sleep pattern started just after getting out of the military. Used to work 18-20hr when in military with no problems and sometimes used an alarm clock for very important meetings but still would awake before alarm went off. Tried all kind of ways to break pattern but keeps returning after 1-3 days. Only one way worked and that was to remain awake three days straight then I would sleep 7-8hrs. Not good to do that.

Yup, it's used on prescription only when absolutely necessary, it's not illegal though so an old colleague used to bring loads back for us when we did nights.
