As long as they weren't being offensive why does it matter? Headdresses like that are cool, I'd wear one if it matched my outfits.

Jonsi and Karen O's headdresses in particular are gorgeous.

They sold headdresses at Glastonbury last year and nobody seemed to think it was a huge political statement. Might just be a cultural difference though, we don't exactly have strong ties with the Native Americans like North Americans seem to.

Sometimes it can just be about something other than racism and hatred.

Because they are only worn for ceremonial occasions and only by our warriors & chiefs and only those of the highest standing?
Perhaps that?

Or should we also be able to wear a military uniform and pretend to be a hero?

Can if you want. Free country and all that.

The headdresses used by non-Native Americans aren't the same kind as those used in Native American ceremonies. If it were then that would be a bit different, but if you're wearing what is only somewhat based on the original then you're taking it out of that context, which separates it from all that. It's like saying you can't wear a bathrobe because some religion uses similar robes for their services.

Ok, resorting to extreme examples and screaming racism to 'support' your point means I'm out. Not worth the aggro.

Isn't he adorable?

Reminds me of the makeshift headdresses we used to make at primary school with bits of cardboard, glitter and feathers.

Who cares that they wore headdresses? Geeze, they mean no harm and the only people who are offended are those that can't see change.

I'm a little shocked at the callous responses to Shino's thread, actually. Even for TFS, they seem uncaring and cold. Like Shino explained, it's disrespectful for non-Natives to wear ceremonial outfitting, even if it's NOT eagle and other sacred feathers or animal skins. IT'S DISRESPECTFUL, folks, what about that don't you understand??? Our local chapter of the "Indian Guides" through the YMCA, who were ALL white people by the way, changed their name to "Y-Guides" and didn't wear headdresses in their "ceremonies" with the kids due to the fact that a local Native American gentleman was highly offended by this practice. They showed respect for a culture and spiritual beliefs. I think it's just ignorant and mean to continue with this even when Native Americans ask that it be stopped.....
