For the purposes of this problem, .999 is a repeating decimal.

S = .999...
10S = 9.999...
10S - 1S = 9S
9.999 - .999 = 9S
9S = 9
S = 1

1 = .999...

With that logic, 1 can equal any number you want it to be. Just substitute for .999.

No it doesn't. Try any other number yourself.

The above phenomenon DOES work for numbers that contain a non-zero digit somewhere after the decimal and immediately followed by an infinite string of 9s. But these do not equal 1 either, but another number, each depending on what the digit and preceeding digits are, and where they are placed.

And, yes, mathematicians have long concluded that .99999etc is just another name for 1.

.9 recurring is of infinite length.

1/3 in decimal is .3 recurring.

.3 recurring + .3 recurring + .3 recurring = .9 recurring.

1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1

See, this is why we should have a base 12 system.

This way, halves, thirds, and quarters would be whole.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, &, >

1/2 = 0.6
1/4 = 0.3
1/3 = 0.4

1/10 would equal... well, i dunno. But half, quarter, and third are way more common.
