Within capitalism, one class must suffer in order for another class to prosper.

This makes people feel bad, because the lower class gets the stick up their ass. People don't like to see others starving, living on the street, dead, etc. Therefore, people demand something different. That is, if they have a heart.

This is where Socialism comes in. Socialism tries to level the playing field, so that people won't be starving, which in turn will make people stop feeling bad. The field is leveled by the public saying where the wealth goes, essentially.

Now, which is America's economy? We're Capitalist, aren't we?

Nope . . . we are a mixed economy, with elements of Capitalism and Socialism thrown in. This means that while we don't let the public control the wealth, we also don't let a huge disparity exist between the classes.

How is this done?

I'd say by taxing the rich more than the poor. After all, the government can't pull money out of nowhere (without repercussions).

income taxes are progressive - the more you make, the more you pay

sales taxes are regressive - you make less, you pay a higher percentage
