The New York Yankees have already wrapped up their ninth straight American League East title and have now set their sights squarely on adding the best record in the American League and home field advantage throughout the playoffs to their long list of accomplishments.

Chien-Ming Wang moved his record to (18-6). And with Jason Giambi out of the lineup due to an injured left wrst; Joe Torre turned to good ol' Gary Sheffield to fill that void at first base for the first time in his career. And he did not disappoint.

Sheffield had seven putouts and impressed Joe Torre by scooping a couple of game saving throws out of the dirt in a 4-1 victory over the Devil Rays.

Robinson Cano and Aaron Guile used the long ball that gave Wang all of the run spport that he needed. He allowed 1 run and 6 hits in seven strong innings of work. Wang also had four strikeouts on the night.

Scott Proctor pitched one inning and Mariano Rivera had three strikeouts in earning his 34th save of the season in his return to the rotation from an ailing forearm.

With A-Rod, Giambi, Damon and Matsui out of the lineup; Joe Torre turned to his deep bench to save the day.

James Shields(6-8) was a tough nut to crack, but the seventh-inning would be his downfall: Bernie Williams singled. Aaron Guile broke the 1-1 tie with a long homer and Melky Cabrera finished off Shields by scoring on a double.

Derek Jeter recorded his fifth 200-hit season of his career.
