I am interested in hearing people's opinions on Robert Doisneau's famous photograph "Kiss at the Hotel de Ville." For much of his life the photographer had claimed that it was a spontaneous kiss but later was forced to admit that it had been staged. For those who do not recognize the name, here is a link to the picture of the photograph:

Here is the question: Does it matter to you that Doisneau lied and claimed the kiss was spontaneous? Or does it matter at all that it was staged to begin with?

Thank you. I am very interested to see what people think of it.

Here is a liar and should be burned.

The picture, however, would be good or bad no matter what.

Honestly though, it looks staged.

Personally it looks really staged. Things seem to be in the perfect spot know what i mean. Either way it is a lovely picture. Even if it was staged.

"Personally it looks really staged"

easy to say after you've been told

i like the one where the little boy is lugging two bottles of wine

staged or not?

i think i heard that the woman in the pic had seen the man around and she had a little crush on him,so she was secretly happy that she got to kiss him,and her husband still hates the pic,who cares, its a great peice of history!

I guess it comes down to what you feel is more skillful - the "found view" photo, that calls for luck and a good eye, or the staged photo that calls for a knowledge of composition, lighting etc...

That he lied about it? Meh, who frikking cares, it's a photograph.

Hello,
Thank you for all of your opinions. Just a little bit of added information: Doisneau did not know this couple but met them on the street and asked them to pose for him. They were indeed dating at the time but eventually broke up some time after the photograph was taken.
Just thought you might be interested to know.
Again, thank you for your opinions.

I think its a great photo, i dont care if it is staged. Im a fan of Vettriano, he paints some wonderful kisses, obviously those are staged too, but they still summon up the passion as does the kiss in the photo.
