This information is coming from a Security Officer who was explaining the new laws they face.

Before, were they placed to stand on one side of the street, they were not allowed to cross the road to help someone being attacked.

Now, they MUST cross the road to stop the attacker yet are NOT allowed to receive 'workers compensation' should they get injured because they left their post.

Basically, they are forced to act yet are denied compo because they acted.

I forgot to add that it looks like a number of security officers have decided to quit if this is what they are going to be up against.

This security officer(Patrol) earn $20 per hour with a major cut back in entitlements should he get injured...if he gets shot, he is being treated like the bad person.

Under Common Law ANYONE and EVERYONE must provide assistance to victims of crime or accident. Additionally under Common Law ANYONE has the power of arrest upon any known offender DURING or IMMEDIATELY after a Crime has been committed and the offender has been witnessed by the arresting person as having committed the crime.
Security Officers are forever getting themselves all twisted in a knot over this issue. It is simple really and so unnecassary to get all so confused.
Under the Workers Compensation Act Employers MUST provide adequate medical support to Employee's whom are injured in the WORKPLACE while carrying out officially condoned functions.
In the case of a Security Guard at the front door of a Bank who witnesses a woman get her purse snatched across the road, he is legally and morally bound to act but yet not covered under the Workers Compensation act as any injury recieved is not directly work related to his specific task.
That is where Victims of Crime compensation comes into play and that is a whole new ball game.
As for a choosing the right Security Company to be employed by, there are literally thousands however all have one common trait and that is to pay their employee's the minimum award rate. Only until a guard reaches the lofty heights of Leading Hand, Site Supervisor or Site Manager will the dollars start rolling in.
You may not get rich being a Security Guard, but you'll never be without a job.
