The claim to land and newborns

I imagine this post will seem barbaric, even sinister to the uninitiated. It's certainly an extreme concept, which fell out of favour in our society centuries ago, but, in the heat of conflict and being in a certain place at a certain time, old ways can resurface. Human history is replete with recurring themes and attitudes that sometimes never die, only lay dormant in us, until triggered by some kind of external factor.

I would like to ask you this: if in a war, you are a rancher, or or had another important holding of your country, if a soldier approached you and challenged you to personal combat to the death for posession of your land and a newborn baby, if he or she existed, what would your answer be?
