Why are Angels depicted as being cute and cuddly?

If you look at children's books and Christian Sunday schools, when Angels are mentioned or illustrated, they are generally quite pleasant. Think of the Angel depicted in the Nativity story, as an example from Christianity. A good example is Schutzengel by Bernhard Plockhorst. Like, how adorable.

Yet if we read into books such as The Bible, The Book of Enoch or The Torah, they are anything but cute, adorable, safe or pleasant. I am not sure if Islam has an equivalent, I believe they have Djinn as opposed to Demons.

Sticking with Christianity, the Arch Angels are bloody frightening.

So why do we as humans so wrongly depict angels. Are we scared of what they are supposed to represent?

1. To appease the gullible masses... back when Christianity was getting a stranglehold on/over paganism, the church didn't want to use the carrot and stick technique... cute (or beautiful) Angels work for god and twisted (wicked) looking devils (fallen angels) work for the devil... when you die do you want to hang out with god and his beautiful angels... or Satan and his ugly demons?

2. Commercialism... think Valentine's day... cut little chubby angles with funny little bows and arrows (borrowed from paganism) are great for selling cards and candy...

Yeah your right. The whole thing with Angels just bugs me though. No particular reason why.

I get a kick out of people that believe when you die you go to heaven and become an angel.

Would love to know where that came from. If my memories of the bible are correct, it states nothing like that. Im pretty sure its something along the lines of we die, our spirit goes to heaven with no memories and we then stay in heaven in infinate worship of God.

Your memory is correct... well except for the no memories part... that might be up in the air.

Yes, something along those lines. We (aka the chosen ones, the elect......quite a lot of diverse groups all claiming to be the ones) shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye and made fit for heaven.

Of course, God could not have have made us perfect and incapable of sin to begin with as he "did not want robots" so waits until the last trump to create what in effect will be robots.

But it all adds up.

On an unrelated topic that is related, the Angel in Netflix's "Midnight Mass" is no angel, but a Vampire.

Death and The Final Judgement are disturbing.

Humans are religious but often our beliefs are too threatening. Instead of praying to the Father or Christ, pray to Mary. Instead of angels being messengers or warriors, they're infants.

It doesn't help (ultimately it is error) but it does make for better greeting cards.
