Well done England on winning the cup. This will give them immense confidence going forward towards the World Cup.

The game was pretty even and Japan had more chances, but England just about did enough.

Onwards and upwards. Well played girls.

New Zealand have won the Netball World Cup beating Australia 52-51 in a fantastic final in Liverpool.

I am sooooooooo glad New Zealand have won. For their country to lose two world cup finals in 8 days would have been heartbreaking and something they really don't deserve.

Credit to the Diamonds (Australia) they played a great game and pushed the Silver Ferns (New Zealand) all the way.

I guess Netball doesn't register on the consciousness of most of you on this site, but it's the game I play and we have had a fortnight of really great netball which has been quite thrilling.

New Zealand, worthy winners and they can take a trophy home from England this week and enjoy the welcome they are bound to get when they fly into Auckland airport.

Earlier this afternoon England beat South Africa for the bronze medal.

England are the current Commonwealth champions and had hoped to win the trophy but the Kiwi girls were too strong in the semi final. They deserved to win.

The current England team will now break up as a number of key players are retiring from the game. They're around the same age as me, so perhaps there's a message there.

Head Coach Tracey Neville is also calling it a day as she now intends to start a family. Best wishes to her for that.

But today belongs to New Zealand and they thoroughly deserve it. Commiserations Australia. Multiple - and worthy - netball champions in the past but not today.

You don't get a coconut every time, Sid.

Action from the final

Kiwi girls celebrate their win

How about the USA's women's soccer team? ...they are better than their male counterparts by a long shot.

Better than their male counterparts how? Is it because they have had more success in their tournaments? Obviously they are not better skill wise (or even close). Indeed not all that long ago they were beaten 5-2 by an U15 boys side from Dallas.

It's absurd isn't it? The idea that woman are better than men because they beat women but can't beat children is one that requires gold medal winning mental gymnastics - and I think it would win gold even if men played in that competition

It wasn't an aberration either. The former world champion Australian team a few years back got beaten something like 7-0 by a team of teen boys.

Still, the captain of the US team has said she should be treated the same as men. I agree. She should no longer have to play against substandard opponents who get thrashed by children. She should play the best of the best.

Remove all gender from sport.
Equal means equal.

Yep. Despite being full time professionals, despite ongoing access to leading sports scientists, physios, nutritionists, the best training facilities in the country etc etc etc they were still beaten 7-0 by a boys U15 team from Newcastle.

Agreed.

Failing that let women set up, administer and fund their own competitions instead of using revenue from the men's game (and then complaining about how they are not treated 'fairly'. FIFA for example should let the women set up their own governing body. Let this body administer the women's game using funds generated by the women's game. This new body (devoid of ANY funding from the men's game) could then decide how much they wanted to pay the players.

What staggers me is the complaints about not receiving from FIFA the same prize money as the men receive. Professional footballers are ultimately entertainers and the money they receive ought to reflect the amount of money their actions generate. The 2018 men's world cup generated over $6.1 BILLION. The recently completed women's world cup generated around $130 million. And yet the women want to receive the same pay as the men! It would be like having two recording artists who are signed to the same label. One recording artist releases an album that generates $610 million in sales. The following year the other artist releases an album that generates $13 million in sales and yet this second artist demands the same amount of money for their album as the first artist. On what planet do these people live?

As an aside money from the men's game largely funds the women's game. And as mentioned before, women already receive more than 3 times the percentage of revenue than men. But as always, it's feelings over facts.
