Wood?

Because liquid saturates the porousness of the wood allowing it to (sort of) have a cushion within the cell structure when bending, rather than (when dry) having no cushion (or buffer) thus causing the wood to be more brittle and break.

On the other hand, if it is old wood the moisture might make it easier to break.

Or are we talking about something else?
