What do you gain from it? Does it make you feel better about yourself? If so, why do you need the reassurance of making yourself feel superior to another person by denigrating them..?

Yeah, it can be used about someone else to make oneself feel better about themselves.
Yeah, it is degrading.
If it is used that way.
I have no issue when it is used in:
- "I did a stupid thing"
- "Well that was stupid of you wasn't it?"
The difference is that the action - not the person - was 'stupid'
