I agree with you.
Yeah, it can be used about someone else to make oneself feel better about themselves.
Yeah, it is degrading.

If it is used that way.

I have no issue when it is used in:
- "I did a stupid thing"
- "Well that was stupid of you wasn't it?"
The difference is that the action - not the person - was 'stupid'

In the early 1900's the Society for the Blind Deaf and Dumb started a school in Hobart for the blind, deaf and mute.

It later dropped the "dumb" bit and became the Royal Tasmanian Society for the Blind and Deaf.

A lot of people miss that distinction.

Or it goes back to that old punk rock song "I wanna be offended"

Wasn't into punk so don't know it. Someone played for me Meek Mill doing Offended.
I confess that I felt offended that my ears had to endure 4 minutes of total trash. lol
