...and I became a Marine. Started the summer of 1966. Retired the summer of 1988. If you had any honor and courage you would have gone to jail. You, Sir, are a coward.

But but...

If all those that protested and/or ran away had the courage of their convictions, I've always wondered what would have happened to our body politic if 10,000 or 50,000 maybe even a 100,000 young men had gone to jail instead of being drafted.

What if you had a war and no one showed up.

Wars are dumb...

Yes.

what would have happened if well over 100,000, 200,000 or more, maybe 2,000,000 protesters would have volutarily gone to jail?

All things being equal, whether one agrees or not, it was a felony to dodge the draft. Protesting is protesting, but if you voluntarily and knowingly break a law you kind of have to expect to go to jail if you're caught.

One of the things that MLK Jr. said that I always thought was very profound is that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.

Back in the olden days, wars were a good means to keep population growth in check.

Famine and disease helped too.
