By the way, The Joshua Norton Cabal of the Discordian society wrote about emperor norton in Principia Discordia. The motto of this cabal is:
"Everybody understands mickey mouse. Few understand Herman Hesse. Only a handful understood Albert Einstein. And nobody understood emperor norton".
Sometimes the discordian society is described as "nonsense disguised as religion, or vice versa".
anyways. The good emperor probably would have died in obscurity if it had not been for the building of the railroads, which was basically as good as the invention of tourism. San fransisco wante to cash in on this fad of people going from place to place just to see them, but back then there was nothing to see.
So. Naturally. The publisized that they had an emperor living there. Joshua Norton, amongst many other things, was one of the most successful commercial ploys pulled by any city looking to hook tourists in my opinion.
