I'm going to take a crack at it.

I BELIEVE that sometimes when you start to inhale water, your esophagus closes up, so no water OR air can get into your lungs, and you choke to death. Ever accidently have water go down the "Wrong pipe"? It's like that. That's a dry drowning.

When a person's lungs get filled with water, that's a wet drowning.

ALSO, if a person inhales a small amount of water and survives, sometimes their systems will fight off the water in the lungs, causing pneumonia, and the person drowns from the secretions/pus in the lungs. That's a secondary drowning.

I'm going off a source that may or may not be reliable, but that's what I could tell you.

I would like some clarification on the nature of certain physics of death. I understand many of the principles, but sometimes, I am not sure which of them apply.

For example, in Cape Fear (1962), when Max Cady drowns Kersek using a sleeperhold to hold him under the water of the river until he stops moving. Does Kersek die from wet drowning or dry drowning? I have recently read about both, but cannot determine which one is the correct form. Please tell me which one.

I'm pretty sure that Kersek didn't stop 'experiencing' until one of the marine life managed to chew through his brain stem.

...if that helps any...
