In about 30 minutes the Space Shuttle Discovery will make a "swoop" over Washington DC, on it's way to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

The most used shuttle will take the place of Challenger as a historical piece.

It will be flying at an altitude of about 1500 feet when it passes over us here.. Of course it will be "flying" on the back of a specially modified 747.

Discovery makes final flight.

Lets hope it doesn't get hijacked.

It was the first shuttle to have a woman captain, and the first to have a black captain. It spent 365 days in space, and traveled 147,000,000 miles before being retired.

I'm watching a live feed on television as it makes it's approach. Since the weather is so good today, they've changed the schedule, and it will be making 4 passes over the National Mall.

Wow, very cool. Hope they get it back in one piece.

A lot of space related things seem to be ending recently, wonder what the next plans are.

I remember all those years ago, seeing the first shuttle landing at Edwards Air Force base and thinking how things had gone full circle for the US space programme.

Edwards was the base where the first attempts at breaking the sound barrier took place, where a bunch of blokes called test pilots, who had the Right Stuff pushed back the boundaries and were the true unsung heroes of the early space race.

The shuttle is a remarkable machine and has made a significant contribution to exploration and the commercial exploitation of space. I'm sure NASA will be looking forward to the next phase of the great space adventure. We shall watch and see.

The flight on television is pretty awesome.. they've basically been doing a lazy figure 8 over the mall for the last 20 minutes..
I'll post the video as soon as it shows up.

I keep hearing it, but can't see it as I'm on the other side of capitol hill.

I channel hopped all the way through everything available on my satellite server, but nobody is covering it, at least not for UK viewers. We may see an edit on the evening news here, as long as nothing else of mind boggling interest, such as some politician getting caught with his trousers down or the umpteenth 'revelation' that it hasn't rained here all year and there isn't any water, as if we didn't know that already.

I would rather watch the shuttle than see Cameron's simpering mug on the evening news any day.
