Very basically, these researchers sort of recreated an ancient yeast with a primitive form of a proton pump and observed it evolve a more modern, complex form.

It's just one tiny little data point in the mass of information on evolution, but it does help us understand how complex and novel evolutionary changes can happen/

The problem is they have created nothing new. They are tinkering with complex structures which already exist or have existed, not actually made anything fresh. That is typical of these sorts of "gee whizz" announcements in science.

Well that's what evolution actually is.

Evolution doesn't make anything 'new' in the sense you mean it.
(though there are 'new' bits in every living thing, there are parts of your genetic code that didn't just come from your parents)
It more tinkers with what exists to evoke gradual change.

Not really. Direction is required for the production of orchestrated effects and phenomena. Meaningful change requires many alterations to relevant protein products - as well as exquisite timing throughout all processes.

Well this study would show the opposite,
Meaningful change was accomplished with the alternation of just two proteins and seemingly at random.

Direction was provided by the scientists - if you read the methodology carefully.

Also they GUESSED at the "probable" starting point.

They then used computational methods to work backwards and find the most likely sequences of these proteins hundreds of millions of years ago, at key branching points on the evolutionary tree: just before and just after the ring increased in complexity.

Key phrase "most likely" how did they determine what was most likely?

And I disagree evolution HAD to make new species eventually. New information had to added to get from the goo to you.
