Depends on the era of rock you're talking about..

You wanna go back to the beginning of rock, I gotta go with Wanda Jackson who made it big in 1955. There were also forgotten greats like Anita Carter, Barbara Pitman, Brenda Lee, and Janis Martin.

The 60s, I'd definitely agree that Janis Joplin is up there, along with Mama Cass, Signe Toly Anderson and Grace Slick (both from Jefferson Airplane), June Carter Cash, and Maureen Tucker (Velvet Underground).

The 70s, Souixsie Souix, all of The Go-Gos, Ari Up (who I was friends with for a brief time until she died almost exactly a year ago), Poly Styrene, and toward the end of the decade, Pat Benetar who of course went big in the 80s.

The 80s, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders), Patty Smyth, Deborah Harry

Beyond that...

Some really great current or recent female rockers/bands I actually really like listening to:

Sleater/Kinney, Bikini Kill, L7, Kim Deal (with The Pixies and also with The Breeders), Ani DiFranco, Brody Dalle (The Distillers and later with Spinnerette), Miss Li, PJ Harvey...

Ummm...

The list goes on and on.

P!nk. The divine Ms Moore is right up there with the greats. We've seen her on two occasions now, when she's toured over here, and both times she was amazing.

Personally though, my own guitar playing style leans more towards blues and I especially enjoy listening to Susan Tedeschi. A very talented woman.
