A while ago I made and published the first ever English translation of the play Eugenie by Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais.

The work has been difficult to promote, however, since Beaumarchais isn't well known out of France (probably because you couldn't get an English translation of anything but Barber of Seville till now) and people are not in the habit of reading plays as literature with the almost sole exception of William Shakespeare.

Anyone have suggestions on what reasonable things* can be done to get people more interested in this play?

*Making a movie version is not reasonable -- yes, that's a popular suggestion for some reason.

you could mention what it's about and who it might appeal to

The plot is that a certain Earl has arranged and undergone a fraudulent marriage ceremony with an upperclass girl named Eugenia. She does not know she's been tricked, and is already pregnant. The Earl is meanwhile planning a legitimate marriage with someone else. Eugenia is becoming suspicious that something isn't right, since the Earl seems to avoid her and is insisting she keep the news of the marriage a secret.

SPOILER FOR THE 250 YEAR OLD PLAY:

The Earl is found out, but because he does legitimately love Eugenia he cancels his other marriage plans and throws himself at the feet of Eugenia and her family, who agree that he is legitimately sorry for his wrongs. This was very cutting edge at the time, as the theatrical traditions of the day would have usually seen the Earl punished for his wrongdoing.

The people who it would appeal to most, honestly, would probably be those already familiar with Beaumarchais or 18th century theater.

Beaumarchais, Eugenia .
