So today my boyfriend and i went for a cruise on some back roads and we found this small graveyard called Butter's Cemetary. It is placed on top of a small, but quite steep hill in the boonies. On the site there was 10 or 11 tombstones, all dating from 1800-1900, and there was 2 or 3 family names, of people that were at one time newcomers to Canada from Scotland.
We thought that it was a little peculiar at first, because they are so old, but also, the site has been well maintained, grass cut, trees trimmed etc. You can tell that it has been done recently, and there was also a couple of the stones, dated in the mid-late 1800's that have been replaced in the last 10 years or less. You can tell just by the general appearance and style of the stone that it is not old, nor is it aged or damaged from weather at all.

The more i think about it, it makes me wonder what makes someone, whether its a friend or family member or whomever, feel devoted enough to still maintain that site, and why that peticular location?

Makes me wish that in 200 years after I am buried in the ground someone would be around and care enough to maintain my resting place along with my family. It is a very nice, sentimental thing, and I am really glad to see that there are still some family values and devotion to family still left in this world. But really, who does that?!
What are your thoughts?

Wow that's surprising that its still being maintained but also lovely. I would love to think that in 200 years someone would still be doing that for me although that is very doubtful. Lovely thought though.

My mother's grave is in Florida - only one of my family members still resides there.

Plane ticket from NZ each week to drop off flowers wouldn't be affordable.

The cemetery near me is really old and unkempt, but there's a group of volunteers who try to keep it looking vaguely tidy.

I don't see the point if I'm honest as I think the dead have better things to worry about than the state of their tombstone. I guess it's a place to go to talk to them though if that's your style.

To think of someone who takes the time to upkeep and maintain a cemetary, even after so many years and for people you haven't known or met, is a wonderful thing It makes me smile to think that people are kind enough to care for someone even after they are gone.

yea it certainly is a nice thought. It's too bad that more people don't care like this. I think the world would be a much better place if people were a little more thoughtful and caring of others. I wish my family had a grave site like that and that someone in 200 years would still be maintaining/visiting me, but -- I highly doubt that!

I definately see your point, and I have to agree for the most part, but still a nice thought. Made my week finding that site. Just makes you wonder what makes someone still care that much after so long, for people they've never met? Sure family is family, but still.... lol

Yeah it's sweet that people think about something like that.
