You seem to be under the impression that Greta Garbo wasn't a 'usual Hollywood bombshell'...

Not quite. She wasn't as brazenly sexual as Monroe or Russell. There was a more succinct and understated sensuality about her.

Another incredibly sensual woman was Leni Reifenstahl, a German actress who rose to prominence during the Hitler era and was a great favourite of his. I don't think she herself was a Nazi, and she wasn't overtly political... it was just a case of "being in that place, at that time".

Evidently, I'm more familiar with names of "bombshells" than I am with faces of them. It's almost eerie how "cookie-cutter" they are...

Something else about Monroe is that she often played the role of the naive, childish debutante. I think of Garbo as being a lot more sophisticated, which holds a lot more allure.

I like the James Dean / Clint Eastwood look.....resulting from not wearing their Coke bottle glasses while on stage.

I agree, Eaglebauer. There is a mystery about Garbo which is an attraction in itself.

Leni Reifenstahl was the archetypal "outdoor girl"... often seen climbing mountains or indulging in outdoor pursuits. She had the glow of healthy exuberance about her... again, not overtly sexual in itself, but holding the attraction of zest for life. Very uplifting.

And empowering. Strength is very attractive in my opinion.

Before James Dean became the heart-throb that he was, who was the major heart-throb before him?

Someone popular in like the 1920's / 1930's?

Oddly enough, while googling this, I came across this site...
Haven't read it yet myself, but looks interesting.
May be helpful somehow to you as well.

You can continue on... I don't mind the 40's... but I was looking for 30's specific for something I'm working on.

James Dean was the first thing that popped into my mind but when I decided to do some research... found that that he really only gained popularity in the 50's and was pretty much a kid in the 40's.

Don't you dare forget Fatty Arbuckle!
