I have a project of The Banned Books Shop and I was amazed by how many of the books were children's books -- and that there seem to be more banned fiction books than non-fiction. (I could understand, even if I wouldn't support, censoring or banning non-fiction; but fiction just makes no sense at all...)

I guess children's books are the most vulnerable since, with some folks, they feel if they wouldn't let their kid read such-and-such then NO kids should read it.

I disagree with censorship (unless a book, film etc is indecent etc). Too often censorship happens because of a particular group of people disapproving on ideological bases which is not a healthy response to freedom of speech.

A fair education is teaching impartially and allowing a person to come to thier own conclusions. Everyone in the planet should have a right to this.

Exactly, treebs. That encourages independent thought and tolerance.

and i am such a strong believer in allowing people to learn for themselves rather than be told what to think. Give them all of the information, if you did the job right then children will make the right choices.

Ah, look, more fodder for the Banned Books Reading Shop....

I once had a book banned by my school AS I WAS READING IT! We had some classroom readers that were various fairytale stories; but I guess they weren't sanitized enough or something. As soon as we turned the page and an illustration of a man with a knife looming over some sleeping little girls was presented, the teacher made us stop reading, and after recess the books had all been taken away by the school principal.
