Just found out my great great grandfather got an MBE from King George VI (the stuttering one) apparently. I'm not entirely sure what he got it for, but I think it was something war related. Still, I found it rather interesting.

Just thought I'd ask whether anyone has ever found out interesting historical facts about your family/ancestry that you'd be willing to share.

EDIT: Ok, it wasn't for anything war-related so no guilt. I've seen it and there's also letters of authentication and a letter from Chamberlain. It's very cool.

A medal you get from the monarch, you also get a title. MBE is 'member of the Order of the British Empire.'

Wow. That is impressive... Then you shall follow suit and march to Iraq where you will somehow kill all the Al Qaeda and be awarded a golden medal from the Queen. All my parents ever got was shot at.

As a pacifist I don't see that happening

I don't like war but still found it interesting to learn something about my family. We never really talk much about family history, so to be shown the medal is quite cool. It's always interesting to see how your family fits into the wider scale of things.

It definitely is. But do you realize that deep down inside of you, in your blood, you're a warrior? You can take down a platoon easily. You just have to see it.

I'm not. I'm a lover not a fighter, and even then I'm ambivalent towards most. I know that another relative or two found ways out of having to go to war as well, which I also found quite interesting from the other side of things.

My Grandma's dad was a friend of Ramsay MacDonald who was the first British Labour Prime Minister.

This was before he was PM but my Great Granda was quite high up in the working class socialist movement which influenced and essentially created the Labour party. They were friends through that.

Eventually my great granddad distanced himself from the Labour party and the movement as he became increasingly communist. By the time he drifted back towards Labour after rejecting communism Ramsay MacDonald was no longer leader.

Always found that quite interesting though.

I'm sure you know yourself best.

You'd be surprised though what life's situtations can conjure up in you.

My Grandad's Grandma (on his Mothers side)lost her husband in the 1st World War, her daughter eloped with a farmhand, and then she lost both her sons in the 2nd World War! Oh, and her Dad was badly injured in the Boer War. My family and war don't go

Though, his father didn't go to war. He had a plant nursery, which was used to grow food and rear chickens/pigs/sheep - so his contribution was becoming a farmer...after running away from doing that!

My other Great Grandad was in India for most of the 2nd WW, so he didn't fight either. Other than them I'm not sure, it isn't really talked about, though I know there were some more relatives that died.

My dad was a relief pitcher in the MLB.

Ok, so they just share the same name.

This something the family does not have any pride about . A member of my paternal side of the family was one of Hitlers top brass . The guy was one of the first to be tried and sentenced for his war crimes.
