So. What do you think? How long do we wait and keep paying ransoms?
If we are going to put up with this soon we might see street kidnappings just like they have now in the banana republics! Yes?
So, I wonder when the navy is going to be given orders & permission to *fire for effect* on these outlaws?

If we are going to fight terrorism....

Then lets do it...

What's your take?

We.. (the US) have never paid ransom.

We.. (the US) shot and killed three of four pirates, and are currently trying the fourth pirate here in the states after refusing to extradite him to Somalia..

We.. (the US) are fighting terrorism.

The ship has something like $200 million worth of oil onboard.

Yeah we're pretty strict with how we've handled Pirates, but after watching a discovery channel (or was it history channel...) program about piracy, even we cut some loose after making them dump their weapons overboard.

QUite a lot of countries have caught them in the act and just escorted them back to their waters and basically cut them loose. Until they treat pirates like back in the Blackbeard days (sunk the ships and hung the pirates), it's going to seem lucrative to the pirates to continue.

I think that each ship should have at least four 50 calibers on board(ready at all times to be fired) and a small contingent of naval personnel from the country that the ship is flagged under...and don't pussy foot around!

I want to say that some African nations have taken on the 'no prisoners' offensive towards pirates. But, of course, I can't prove it. And, after looking up a little but of inconclusive stuff on Google, I'm guessing these are different types of pirates. Ones who are interested in cargo and not ransom. It's a little bit of a different situation there.

I've heard that some shipping companies have resorted to hiring Mercenaries. But i'm sure that gets costly and can't go along with every shipload. Also that added cost will end up costing the consumer, not the company.

I blame Pirates of the Caribbean for this upsurge in piracy over the last couple years. Damnit Disney!

On the other hand...who's paying the cost for shipments that are lost altogether? Which would be more worth it?
