Giving soap (rather "fancy", for example from Crabtree & Evelyn)

I would be so offended if I got soap as a gift really because it would show people don't know me at all as I have a soap bar phobia

thats f***ed up man

Oh yes liquid soap is fine, that is all I will ever use but I cannot touch soap bars. They freak me out.

I don't think I've ever given soaps as a gift - I have gotten them though, as a stocking filler I loved them though, they were just Body Shop shaped ones, but it didn't matter.

I dunno, if they were expensive ones then it's not really tacky, though I don't think it should be about money. And just because you give an expensive gift, you shouldn't expect one - or expect one at all. I find that really petty tbh.

Maybe she just got confused with her preferred brand or she had tried them and thought her friend would also enjoy them

I wonder if the friend knew that was her preference tho.

It just seems like one of those things that would make me not want to exchange gifts anymore.

Yes, she knew her preference. Also, I don't think that the reason she didn't like it was because she thought the soap bars weren't expensive, but rather than it was a strange idea for a gift.

We definitely have different habits in different countries (I'm from Mexico) so maybe that counted too. I also think that the price of the gift is not a guarantee that it will either be an appropriate or liked gift.

Agree with the adoption of the penguin though

I was wondering about this because this Christmas I was celebrating at a close friend's house, who got a set of soaps as a gift from a mutual friend; I thought this was a tacky gift, something that I should definitely never give a friend as close as she is, but I was wondering what do you think about it? Do you think it was OK?

@gaviota Said

Thank you for your reply. Definitely my friend didn't like the gift at all (that's why I started this post), even when she agreed that it was from a good brand, because it's not something she particularly likes. It would have been different for example if the soap had been from Guerlain, which is her signature brand.
She thought of it to be a gift from someone who was not as close a friend with her.

Boo hoo, there are people starving in the streets on Christmas day, and the friend didn't get Guerlain for Christmas. Sheesh.

She should send everyone a list of appropriate Christmas gifts for herself for next year. If all the friends are close ones and expected to know better than to get her L'Occitaine, they will all understand.
