sometimes in work environments people are cold shouldered, silence when they walk in a room or people will chat about TV or weekends and so on but never involve certain co-workers and that is kind of rude.

Okay, it is rude...I still can't see it as a reason for quitting your job. What kind of message does that send to your next employer?

NEW EMPLOYER: Why did you quit your last job?
MARIE: I couldn't work with one of my co-workers.
NEW EMPLOYER: Oh? Did she sabotage your work?
MARIE: No.
NEW EMPLOYER: Did she refuse to help you on the job?
MARIE: No.
NEW EMPLOYER: What did she do?
MARIE: She wouldn't chat with me.

I'm probably coming across as unsympathetic and maybe rude, but I just don't see how, if she's not actively harming Marie's job...how is that a reason for quitting?

Oh and I certainly wouldn't max out the sick days looking for a new job. That would probably guarantee her a bad reference from the current employer.

I'm with Treebs. At least for the sake of the co-workers who aren't mean then it would be a bad idea to take that sick-leave to buy time. I had to cover someone's sick-day today and it was annoying. I was only down for an evening shift tonight but I was asked to work at one of the busiest shops so it's not like I had the choice of saying no. I hadn't planned on being awake for a day-shift so I was running on a few hours sleep and my sprained ankle swelled up again. The worst part was feeling it pressing against the inside of my boot and not even being able to take my boot off without risking not getting it back on again.

Long story short, if you don't actually find anything then you've only succeeded in pissing other people off.

if its a simple case of not socialising well thats pretty normal actually, but taking sick leave until finding a new job is a bit bad and unfair on others.

Also don't be quick to judge someone. A couple of months ago I had a horrible evening at work with a manager who wouldn't talk to me and an empty shop. No matter how hard I tried to find a comment to interest her in she wouldn't talk to me, she would just smile, give one-worded answers and go back to her newspaper but would make small-talk with the customers. It made me feel really terrible and when she let me go 5 minutes early (which would be seen as a nice gesture from anyone else) it just convinced me that she hated me. My deputy manager tried to convince me that she was just having a bad night and that I was over-reacting. I was put down to work a Sunday shift with her and it turned out that I was overreacting. The second time round on a one-to-one basis we got on great.

It can make for a crappy work atmosphere, but it's no reason to take a sick day.

Yeah one day wouldn't really count, but if it happens on a continuous basis, then it can be a problem.

Well you don't know why they're not socialising, they're maybe just shy. Someone not talking to you is no reason to take a sick day, especially if they haven't indicated that they don't like you.
