what do you think is the most important painting of all time. it is a tough decision, but i am going to have to go with "women of avingnon" by Pablo Picasso.

The art in the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. My feelings aren't based on religion; I just can't imagine how he managed to do that in the time with no air conditioning, modern conveniences, on scaffolds flat on his back, etc. I've seen it in person and left in awe going, "How'd he do that."
You can't pick just one; different artists changed the art world and people's concept of what is art, over the centuries.
There are so many different art forms, how do you choose?

I'd say The Mona Lisa is the most famous; the most important, in my opinion there isn't one.

Well Paul Reveere made a nice painting and got two Britsh soldiers hanged before the war even started. The court used his painting as an eyewitness when no one else in the court room could verify Paul even being there. That painting probably helped motivate the bringing of a war.

Important in what sense? Some paintings were very important in the art world but had no real influence outside of that (example, Warhol's soup cans). Some paintings were politically important but might not have been important as works of art (example, Holbein's portrait of Anne of Cleves which was the basis of Henry VIII's selecting her as a wife.)

First a standard of importance must be set, then we can discuss.

We have been fascinated with wall paintings created ages ago but I once encountered some new ones at artyii.com, and the artworks there are amazing.
