Whoa! I hate arguing. You got me there--I don't agree with those stats. Yes, that's true. It's because everyone I know and everyone I see around me is going through a tough time economically. I see broken people that once used to be proud of their degrees working demeaning jobs to make the mortgage. I see prices for everything going up and pay not following.
So, did I and everyone I know do something wrong? Are you upset at me because I don't fit those stats?
I'm sorry if that came off argumentative. I wanted to talk about where I see hope, where I see progress for everyone: Europe.
It's new, but it's old and wise, too. The Union is made up of countries from a continent that have had war and injustice for a millenia--they're weary and ready for change. They're making those changes. I'm happy about that and kind of wanted to share that in this thread. I'm sorry that I've gotten caught up in domestic mumbo-jumbo.
Reiko, the economy is doing well. I just hope I can catch up.

Compare these numbers:

$829 Billion deficit, $1.7 trillion in imports and only $927 billion in exports, I can't see how anyone could say the economy is in good shape. Hell if my bank account was in the red and I was spending more than I was earning, I'd be seriously concerned!

That's not even factoring in the cost of the Iraq war. Which stands at around $234 billion so far.

Never the less the economy has been in a massive growing spurt and unemployment is low.
Back in WWII roosevelt ran a 25% deficit and the economy wasn't destroyed.

Yet you say the economy is strong when the debt is getting larger and larger year after year? That doesn't bother you?

Sure it bothers me but it doesn't mean the economy is about to crash. The debt has always been there and growing for a century. It will never be payed off. All you can do is slow it 's growth down.

Stop out-sourcing all your manufacturing jobs would be a good start. Surely getting imports below exports is very possible.

That would be nice if manufacturing didn't cost so much here. It's almost impossible to compete with other nations because of that.

Good point I guess. The problem is somewhat the same here in Australia as well. Ok maybe the coalition of the willing should forget about the war on terror and declare a war on asian sweat shops instead!

ehmm...
wait a minute

bendover said, "poorer countries such as "Turkey"?

Turkey is poor?
mate, dunno if u already know about it, but Turkey is potentially actually the richest country in Europe. Its just not stable enough... I have to admitt, the leaders in Turkey, totally dont know what they are doing...
They think they are acting right, by selling the "raw material" turkey has, to other international coorporations.
But the thing is, some dude, made those contracts a couple decennia ago. And he signed for like 50 years...
If everything goes well, in 2012, the contract expires, and all the raw material can stay in Turkey, for production.
And if u watch the progress yourself, if u read what is written by international economic analysts... u will see that Turkey is now, the place to be for multibillionair coorporations... EVERYBODY, literally EVERYBODY is waiting in line, to get an positive answer from the current leaders. They all want to invest in Turkey...
And hey, the reason Turkey isnt allowed in the EU, doesnt have anything to do with the economy and so called "human rights"...
We have "human rights", yes we do
BUT, thats not the issue... International laws say us, that we dont have... Why? Because in the east of turkey, bad s*** happens... Why? Cause they dont wanna evolve with the current plans Turkey made... Who are they in the east? Kurdish people and antiprogressive people...
And Turkey has to deal with them, and like u already realized... It isnt simple to communicate with people who doesnt know how to communicate...

Another issue... our jails... one of the biggest "human rights" problems in Turkey. Alot of bad s*** happens, and the conditions the prisoners are in, are really really bad... But hey, im not saying they deserve it, but they dont want help. Why? Because they dont allow it... They want the media to see how bad the conditions in Turkey is... They want the media to see how bad Turkey handles with "human rights"... It sounds crazy, but its really like that.
But trust me if i say this. Turkey is doing all it can, and using all in its powers, to make Turkey a better place to live and work... But many many people keep getting in the way... Wich makes it so hard to evolve further... And we have to stay between lines. If someone comes between turkey and its development, the best thing i can think of, is to shoot the bastard down... but u cant do that... thats whats keeping Turkey down, and thats what making Turkey look bad...

And yeah, to stay honest, the EU is also afraid of the immigrations that will follow when Turkey becomes a member... I admit, there will be a big flow to the european countries, but not as much as they expect...
Because Turkey is making big progress on economic and political values...

And maybe, and i say again maybe... Its the extreme-right politicians, who currently leading in the major countries of EU, that doesnt want Turkey to join in...

anyways, i dunno if what i said has anything to do with the maintopic, but i just wanted to point this out.

Another little detail... Watch the properties that are sold to foreign people in turkey... From Belgium only, last year, 12000 people bought a summerhouse. From the Netherlands, around 50000 people. From Germany, around 75000 people... thats HUGE... thats VERY HUGE...
That shows seomething... That Turkey is really becoming a nice and fair place to live...

And if the polars keep melting at the current tempo, in 50 years, half of europe will be under water... SO, where is the best place to go? Yes... Turkey

Anywayz

Are there any plans for the EU to have a unified military?
