Before we had a welfare state in Britain, often severe poverty was commonplace. There are never enough jobs and opportunities to have a little 'toytown' society like you describe.

America has never been a "welfare state" no matter how many liberals wish that tragedy upon us. Tuesday's election spoke for itself.

Are there lazy slugs here who abuse the welfare system we have? Of course there are. There will always be losers in every type of society. But we have choices here because America is the land of freedom and always has been. So MANY have died for those freedoms and their deaths shall not be in vain. Those of us who reject socialism are merely trying to preserve OUR country.

Another thanks be to God for the beautiful people during this victory week.

So health care is a socialist agenda. Not according to the preamble of the USA constitution were it say that government is there "To promote the general Welfare". I'm guessing that this means to keep people healthy. Also the US is in such major problems financially not because of spending on "socialist programs"as you called them but because its engaged in 2 very costly wars, defense spending has been unchecked and there was massive tax cuts, not helping "the real America" as Palin keeps referring to the inner states, but in fact helping the very rich in places like California and New York. All of these policies done by pork gobbling, republicans. A little bit of tax on the rich (and I'm not talking a huge hike) can help so many people that can't help themselves. The disabled, the young, the old. The most vulnerable in society need to be helped. They don't have choices. This is nothing to do with ideologies but proper human decency.

you are referring to income tax (on a federal level about 25% on a average earner then it depends were you live on what state taxes you pay)

Well, no, the preamble was not addressing health issues in the latter quarter of the 18th Century.
