But, then, almost anything can be potentially bad for you. So why bother to live at all?

I probably had my first sip of beer when I was 3 or 4, my cousin tricked me into drinking it and I absolutely hated the stuff (still do). I think growing up I was allowed a sip of whatever my mum would drink (usually Bailey's or Kalua) and I started experimenting with alcohol at about 16, but was only ever allowed 2 or 3 cruisers. It hasn't been until this year (year I turned 18, so I was 17 for over half of it) that I've actually really had any experiences with alcohol. I'd like to think I have a responsible attitude to alcohol, but I know that I sometimes have and will make mistakes (but don't we all?).

So I think a good age is probably about 16/17 to start drinking, but again it depends on the person and their maturity level, some people are going to understand the whole concept of alcohol and responsible drinking earlier than others, so you can't actually put a definite age on it, like anything really.

Ok, so in the UK you can drink alcohol in your own home from 5, drink with a meal at a restaurant at 16 and drink as much as you bloody well like at 18.

But at what age is it acceptable to start experimenting with alcohol? When do you give your children their first sip of wine or beer? How old until you let them have a full glass? At what age is it acceptable for your kids to go out and have a few drinks with their friends?

I was personally allowed sips of wine from about nine, and first got drunk about 13/14, by the time I was 17 I was going to the pub about once a week.

I actually drank more when I was 17/18 than I do now and feel I have a good respect for alcohol. What about you?

I grew up in a household bereft of alcohol entirely, though i started getting drunk by various means at about 15, and my parents never stopped me. When I left home at 17 I was partying most nights and into my 20s I was a total beer monster. Now, at 31,I drink much less than I used to, but I still don't 'respect' alcohol, I don't see why I should. It's there for us to enjoy, sometimes I drink to be sociable, other times I want to get leathered, the key is being in control, and I am.

Yeah. Alcohol is like a lot of things - money, sex, etc...they have no value except in the minds of snobs, lol. The trick is to learn the balance and just run with it.
