Is it fair to arbitrarily increase punishment to your child?

If you were to tell your child that if he or she did a certain sin or mistake, you would implement a certain punishment, and when that infraction took place, you added a number of extra punishment, would you think you were acting in a fair and just manner?

A scenario would go like this.
If you told your son, if you do not make your bed, I will ground you for 2 days.
That same day, he did not or refused to make his bed.
You confront him and say that he is grounded for 2 days. At the same time, you tell him that he is also grounded for a further week and also looses all T V privileges and must also do the dishes for a month.

Do you think you have dealt fairly with your child?

Nope. That's completely not fair and it teaches your child that you're basically a liar.

It is completely unfair. You can't say one thing and do the other. That's lying and you don't want your kid to copy that.

I think that when I increase punishment it has more to do with the atitude the child presents to me.

ie:
Make your bed or you'll get a time out (grounding over not making a bed is silly imo)

child does not make bed. I put them in time out.

If he/she doesn't sit in time out, or gives me lip or says "but I was gonna do it later" with a negative tone (every parent knows the tone, it's the Darlene from Roseanne show tone) then it might turn into a full grounding.

However, you just add on more punishment with no further infraction from the child, then yeah, that's so wrong.

I wouldnt even sweat it...only reason id get mad at my kid is if he/she got a girl pregnant, or got pregnant, or if they tried hard drugs

Grounding someone over a made bed is whack as hell...

you'd be surprised what you don't realize you have to punish a kid for.

My reasoning is, if it can hurt them worse than the punishment, I should punish them.
