That's what I like: something I can go back to again and again. Sometimes I finish a book and wish I hadn't read it so I could read it for the first time again.

I'm kind of like that. Although I do like catching the bits you sort-of didn't read right the first time around

The Belgariad and the Malloreon. The Belgariad is the coming of age and the Malloreon's a bit more mature but you kind of have to know the Belgariad for bits of it to make sense. I haven't read the two book that go with those - Belgarath the Sorceror and Polgara the Sorceress - but they're meant to be really good too.

I thought of those too and forgot to mention it. I've only read the Malloreon but I thought it was great.

Well, that's two votes so I'm definitely going to order them from the library.

Thanks both. I've read the Douglas Adams and the Terry Pratchett but not the Jonathan Howard or anything on 8F10z's list, so MY list is growing apace. KatanaDoshi, is that Bernard Black on your avy?

in my 20's, i read the classic " stranger in a strange land " by robert a. heinlein, it is a pretty good book. i thought " the lords of the rings ", it was a great trilogy and " the hobbit " was a fun novel. the sci-friction writers are issac asimov, ray bradberry, and arthur clark are the best, i really enjoys their works. kurt vonnegut, i read as fantasy books, i could understand fantasy , with strange characters in them. the political and society overtones were over my head. but with his works, if you don't read between the lines, there are fun to read !

Thank you ALL! I've got a good list to start me off, so it's a visit to my library website (whilst I've still got a library) to reserve some SF books.
