Atheists could set up their own schools in England under the government's education reforms, Education Secretary Michael Gove has said.

Mr Gove said he would be "interested" in proposals from individuals such as atheist Professor Richard Dawkins.

Last month Prof Dawkins, who wrote The God Delusion, said he liked the idea of starting a "free-thinking free school".

Under Mr Gove's "free schools" plan, parents, teachers and others will be able to set up their own schools.

I think this is possibly the first time I've ever agreed with what this guy has said.

This would be very good for the UK!

As long as it allows for true "free thinking" which is the problem for the majority of the schools in the UK right?

Well I believe it is a bad idea! And here is why,it will only serve to isolate atheists from non atheists. What should be done is to include atheist topics in the curricula. And to attempt to reach peace and undertstanding between the two groups. If it is conducted properly non-atheists can gain an understanding of the atheist's positions on the subject of religion. If it is done without acrimony every one would gain.

I agree.

I've always felt religion has no place in schools anyway, I went to a pretty hard core christian school myself and it was awful.

I want to know my kid is doing well in school and not worrying about reciting the lords prayer correctly.

I disagree with the idea tbh.

Education should not be established upon personal beliefs such as religion, or extreme views.

I'd like to see all faith schools phased out completely.
