A manhunt is on for an Afghan soldier who killed three British servicemen in Helmand Province, Afghanistan yesterday.
Yet another example of an infiltrator breaking cover, to commit his murderous act and then run for the cover of his Taliban buddies.
I have been saying this from the very start of the war, that as soon as there was a declared intention to train the so-called Afghan police / army, to (ostensibly) take charge of their own security, then there was bound to be infiltration by malign forces.
How many more of these sleepers exist within the ranks..? How many more of these men are we training to become highly effective killers, who will then take the abilities they have learned, and apply them against us, or train more of their buddies in our techniques, tactics and skills so that they can be used against our troops..?
Already, we suffer from the legacy techniques that the US forces taught to the (then called) Muhajideen insurgents who fought the Soviet army in the early 1980's. Back then, they were the Muhajideen and they we treated them as Freedom Fighters. Now, of course, they are the Taliban and they are terrorists.
Funny how exactly the same people can be so easily morphed from freedom fighters into terrorists, isn't it.?
Be that as it may, we simply aren't learning the lessons, are we..? Afghanistan is a nation of disparate tribes. Once you leave Kabul, the Afghan people don't have a collective identity as a nation in the way that we do.
These tribesmen back the team that has the most guns and / or can do something for them on any particular day. They won't feel any loyalty to us for training them. Once the troops have left, they will simply revert into their old tribal ways and all these highly skilled, well trained and armed "policemen" and "soldiers" that we leave behind won't think twice about switching sides as soon as it suits them to do so.
In years to come, we will still be facing Islamic terrorists.... they'll just be better trained and more highly skilled, is all.
This dreadful murder.... this knife in the back... isn't the first incident of it's kind in Afghanistan, and I hazard to say it won't be the last.
We are in a hole out there, and we just keep on digging. Stupidity.
