People from two groups get the same question and answer with a score between 7 (not woilling) to 35 (completely willing, the results:

persons average score standard dev
group1 40 26.4 6.6
group2 65 27.3 6.3

Check whether the average score in group2 is lower than the maximum score (alpha=0.05)
Answer:
Z=-9.85, probability is 0 which is < 0.05
conclusion is: the average score in group2 is lower than the maximum score
My question: how was the -9.85 calculated?

Your Bill was $20.00
You only gave the clerk $10.15
The register showed you owed her: $9.85

That's where the -9.85 comes in!
