You probably could, although I would view that as a drawback.

I think the primary attraction to fretless basses is that 1- you don't get a muted sound from not pressing the string down hard enough and 2 - when/if you slide notes, it sounds cleaner.

That's just my opinion though. I'm not the best guitar player in the world and I don't play bass.

Just keep playing the same numbers all the time. I'd be willing to bet (if it comes true ) he'll recognize part of his dream, stop dead in his tracks and say 'OMG, This is from my dream!!'
