what is section 28 about?

Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 was a controversial amendment to the United Kingdom's Local Government Act 1986, enacted on 24 May 1988 and repealed on 21 June 2000 in Scotland, and on 18 November 2003 in the rest of the UK by section 122 of the Local Government Act 2003. The amendment stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

Thank you for explaining, Katie. I am thinking perhaps it is like 1810 and not 2010.

I think we need to take the views of some people regarding The incoming government with a bit of a pinch of salt.

There are certain posters who are hard line left-wingers of the old Labour Party who are just bitter and twisted because the country dumped their beloved Gordon Brown at the election a fortnight ago.

The phrase "Bad Losers" springs to mind.

Basically, any post on here emanating from Scotland may quite possibly come from a hardline socialist source. Perhaps readers might like to bear that in mind. The new government is actually greatly impressing the general British public in its early days. Honeymoon period..? Possibly, but a good start is a good start.

To be honest, Theresa May isn't exactly my cup of tea either. It is true that she has strong views on homosexuals and that obviously affects me. However, she is now a part of a government that has, today, produced a document of intent which, if enacted in the lifetime of the Parliament will be radical and reforming, but fair and will actually replace a lot of the "Big Government" state control that the Labour Party forced on a largely unwilling populace over 13 years.

The Labour Party did some good things for social justice during their time in office, that can't be denied..... I wouldn't be married now if they hadn't brought in the Civil Partnerships Act.... but other things, such as The Surveillance Society (Britain has more surveillance cameras watching the public than any other country on earth), and the National ID Card Scheme caused deep mistrust and division in the country.

Those Conservatives of hard line views in the government should have their wings clipped by the coalition leadership. I hope that is how it will work out. I'm quite sure the Scottish hardcore socialist element on this site will naysay to that, but then again, they would.

I don't know if the coalition government will or won't work. I don't have a crystal ball that can predict the future. But our country was ruled by rotten "Big Brother" government for a long time and we now have a leadership that is talking the talk of a new start and a new politics.... and goodness knows, we need it.....

Can Cameron / Clegg walk the walk..? Well, they have five years to do it. I think they should be given a fair crack of the whip.

So lets see, you dislike socialism, are racist against the Scots and you support a government that puts a homophobic nutter as Minister for Equality?

Anyone else find it somewhat Ironic that she is using Big Brother, a concept created by George Orwell, to criticise the very thing that Orwell created Big Brother to defend?

Homophobic Lezzas, what next? Extremist pacifists?

Both, the title has changed to Home Secretary and Minister for Equality.

And she's prejudiced against the gays.

I was sad to see Gordon Brown go, I think he was very badly stabbed in the back. I am happy that the greedy back stabbers are not actually in power now even though i am usually a Labour voter.

I wonder if this appointment is something to do with the "family values" s*** the libs and tories are banging on about.

I think Samantha needs to give her husband a good slap then

What was the point of giving her both jobs? Like, surely there are enough MP's that they can spread it out. And it just makes more work for her (I imagine).

It's the same post but incorporates both roles. Equality is fairly low on the Conservatives ideas or wants. If equality gets in the way of freedom they chose freedom, part of their essential ideology.

Quite surprisingly, Theresa May issued a statement last Friday announcing that she has now changed her mind...!!!

She stated that yes, it was true she had voted against the Civil Partnerships Act and other gay equality legislation, but she had now re-thought her position and would be supporting it in the future.

Leopards changing spots..? Personally, I don't think so. Rather, I think she has been quietly pulled to one side by the party leader and had a word put in her shell-like. One suspects that a word from Nick Clegg to David Cameron to rein in his right-wingers would have had the desired effect. And Cameron, I believe, is shrewd enough to see the wisdom in that.

For better or worse, Theresa May is now, as well as being Home Secretary, is Equalities Minister and it is her job to promote.... er.... equality.

Quite what her personal feelings may be is one thing, but when it comes to doing her job she is going to have to fulfil the remit of her portfolio or face a trip to the back benches. It wouldn't have been quite put in that way, but I'm sure the point won't have been lost on Ms May.

Time will tell. Let's wait and see.
