i figure if i have some background knowledge he wouldnt be able to bs me and charge me excessively.
real estate agents do that ALOT and i figure architects are the same.

With a draftsman you're going to pay a couple thousand dollars for a decent set of plans. An architect will be more, and the construction of a crazy house will be more expensive too due to nonstandard window sizes/shapes and nonstandard materials.
