My girlfriends german shorthair pointer has her tail docked, and they seemed to think it was really important to have it docked. I doubt she would have allowed the dogs tail to be docked unless there was a good reason to have it gone.
My old grandpa would dock tails with a rubber band (he would use the same method to fix dogs) because he thought they looked stupid with long tails.
I'll have to do some research on that breed. Grasshopper's post about pit bulls made sense, but I need to find out more about the other breeds.
