Luckily my Mums old friend works for some Australian government agency in DC. Maybe I won't have to pay him if I go there. I herd the neighbourhoods right behind the white house are bad? is that true? If so that's kind of Ironic.
DC has two things going on.. Government, and tourists. If you work for the government (which is about 80% of the people in DC) the tourists are slow moving objects that are always between you and where you need to be. So, you're a pain in the ass.
If you're in any other field in DC (The other 20% of us), tourists are just annoying, because we all live here and know how to get around, and we don't understand why you just can't read the signs that are literally EVERYWHERE telling you where you are now and where everything else is.
As to the neighborhoods, South Capitol Street is still a little skeevy below Nationals stadium (10 people shot there Tuesday night), and the anacostia portion of Southeast is a little dicey, unless you're buying crack.
Northeast is a little run down, but basically working class. And Northwest is really nice. Nobody really lives in Southwest, it's mostly government buildings and monuments.
But.. a tourist would only end up somewhere nasty if they got really really really lost.. and you'd know that because all those stupid "you are here" signs wouldn't be there.
Or you'd be out looking to buy crack.
