I don't mind them leaving their little bits of literature to read at my leisure, but they just want to keep you talking and when you've got tea on and kids running riot that's not always possible, but if I say I'm sorry I'm too busy to stand and chat they just ignore it and carry on, I then have to be rude and close the door, which then leaves me feeling bad for treating people that way when I didnt even invite them in the first place......

Meh, I'm sure they're not as worried about the rudeness as you are. Anyone going door-to-door must be prepared for having the door shut on them. And if they are ignoring you saying you're too busy at the moment, what else can you do?
