"Boy" can be a racist term. If you are talking to a boy- usually not- but that depends on it's use and intent. Calling an adult black male "boy" is always to be considered derogatory.
That always seemed strange to me, because Uncle Tom was the good guy. The 1 intended to get the population riled up and join the Abolitionist Movement. If I'm remembering right, he didn't act like an "Uncle Tom" at all. In fact, I heard the phrase as we know it now came from D.W. Griffith. Not the best person to take such a phrase from.
