Do propane molecules have a constant length? Are butane molecules the smallest hydrocarbon with a variable length? Or do molecules have length? Could it be more like diameter?

If the diameter of carbon atoms were 2 units, then distance between carbon atom nuclei in ethane would be two units.

In propane, what would be the distance from the first carbon nucleus to the third? Could the nuclei form a straight line or would they form a triangle?

I think that maybe the atoms of a hydrocarbon can form a sort of straight line. The angle between any two odd or two even atoms would be the tetrahedral angle, but because the angle can lie in either the positive or negative direction all the atoms can lie in the same plane.

Something like this.

C-C . . /C-C
.... C-C

It's not really a straight line. Maybe it's two straight lines.

If we view that carbon chain in post #3 from the beginning, we see only two atoms, the first and third atoms.
