It's so easy as well. We were doing an explosives residue analysis today using capiliary electrophoresis (slow!) and doing some presumptive tests on a little unknown compound. Somehow our sample got contaminated. We had sample C which should have had 5 nice clear peaks. From nowhere we got this massive giant 6th peak that really messed it all up and we have no idea where it came from. We cleaned the swab in acetonitrile and after we swabbed the bomb fragment it never left the nice clean test tube it was in. Ellie used an auto pippette to put in our internal standard and even checked her mental maths with me to make sure that she'd rightly converted cm^3 to microlitres. So where did the contamination come from?
