Rehabilitation! That is what everyone thinks they get from prison?
B.S., they learn more criminal acts in prison than they do on the streets.
Why do they get a chance for rehabilitation? Someone in my family was 22 years old and screwed a 13 year old. He got 2 years behind bars and was listed as a child molester for another 5 years. He is still the same ole bastard he was before he went to prison. He didn't deserve to have another chance on the streets. He is still married to my niece and has 4 kids of his own. He treats them all like s***.
Of course, she was crazy to take him back and have more children with him.
If we can offer "euthanasia" for elderly to keep them off healthcare we can definitely eliminate child molesters.

Sex offenders have the lowest rate of recidivism of any class incarcerated.

Are we talking about guys who streaked on a school oval once in front of school kids, or paedophiles?

As you yourself pointed out, the stats get murky when we don't distinguish high level sex offenders in the stats.

We wouldn't accept re-offense rates - no matter how low - for serial killers. In most countries they are imprisoned for life, no parole, no 2nd chances.

Why is our treatment of sex offenders so different? Espec when those offenses are against children?

Yes, I was wrong on that. Depending on which story you read, the recidivism rate is from 5 to 90 percent. I've learned the lesson about quoting from memory many times and I expect I'll learn it again. After further research, I don't know what the rate is and apparently no one else does either. I'm guessing that you'll never earn grant money by proving that sex criminals respond to treatment.

I don't think they should get the death penalty, but at least castrate them before they get released.

What do you cut off of a female sex offender?

Put it to a local referendum.

Let the local populace come up with creative punishment, and the rest vote on those ideas.

I could come up with some real creative punishments for this sort of thing.

Also, in your opinion, do you think rehabilitation does?

Yes, when combined with schemes to reduce deprivation and inequality.
