An international debate is needed on the use of autonomous military robots, a leading academic has said.

Noel Sharkey of the University of Sheffield said that a push toward more robotic technology used in warfare would put civilian life at grave risk.

Technology capable of distinguishing friend from foe reliably was at least 50 years away, he added.

However, he said that for the first time, US forces mentioned resolving such ethical concerns in their plans.

"Robots that can decide where to kill, who to kill and when to kill is high on all the military agendas," Professor Sharkey said at a meeting in London.

"The problem is that this is all based on artificial intelligence, and the military have a strange view of artificial intelligence based on science fiction."

'Odd way'

Professor Sharkey, a professor of artificial intelligence and robotics, has long drawn attention to the psychological distance from the horrors of war that is maintained by operators who pilot unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), often from thousands of miles away.

"These guys who are driving them sit there all day...they go home and eat dinner with their families at night," he said.

"It's kind of a very odd way of fighting a war - it's changing the character of war dramatically."

So we just send out loads of robots to war, they send out loads of robots to war, all the robots kill each other and we are left with legions upon legions of computer/robot experts in white coats left over in a war to see who can build a robot faster than the other lot to win the war?

Or maybe all the robots get destroyed, and everyone goes 'OK, what now, how do we fight now? Apparently in the past humans used to fight each other or something. Imagine that!

Already too many killed by 'friendly' fire. So called 'smart' bombs exist. The UK has outlawed use of land mines, triggered by proximity, ie automatic. With science looking for new ways to kill we overlook how to promote peace. If resentment and rage promote suicide bombers we, as part of the world community, have more to be alarmed about here than in robots.

He should do a profile on the "cabinate" that surrounded Hitler and came up the "The Final Solution" ...
..They went home in the evening to have dinner with their families
"Can you pass the butter over to your father dear...after all he IS the biggest, most clinical, most methodic and systematic mass murderer that the world will ever know...in human form".
Giving that job over to machines will only be opposed by those that see a career oppurtunity for themselves.
We NEED to know the Radovan Carovitch s' and the Slobovan Milosovitch s' of the world that reside among us...Sadly they share this desire for recogition too...At a lethal price.
It won't make any difference who or what makes the killing...it is the justification FOR the killing.
In that regard, humans are just as cold, clinical, dispassionate and logical as any machine AI will ever be////except the concept of religous belief systems....any machine will tell you that it is immpossible to implement a killing strategy based on the Deity Concept...i.e. it is totally illogical and therefore does not compute

Well, that would already make it safer than fighting alongside American troops.
