Smart and polite are very different things.

If someone graduated Harvard Law, got a seat on the Supreme Court, and single-handedly cured both AIDS and cancer with an amazing completely synthetic organic nanobot, but acted like a condescending jerk to idiots who constantly told him he had no idea what he was talking about and made fun of his hair, you can't say that person isn't smart.

Well, you can. But you'd be stupid. And wrong.
